On the drive home we stopped at 1) an antique store in CO where I bought a $15 painting, 2) the Virgin River Gorge to do some 'canyoneering', and 3) Las Vegas to visit Richard and collect our free iphones.

Ken organized a large group Joshua tree trip and set a bunch of top ropes both Saturday and Sunday. The Saturday climbers included Paul, Adam, Ellen, Dax, Dave O, Raina, Vivian, Niki, Steve, Courtney, Melissa, Tim, Tami and my good friend Erika Streck. My eyes were about -5.5(R) and -5.75(L) diopters with a slight astigmatism in my left eye. Contacts caused a vein to appear in my right eye due to lack of oxygen to my cornea. Kyle and his two room mates Alyssa and Pat Teehan hosted a 70's theme New Year's Eve party, complete with a dj, dancing, games, and an end of the night scuffle. The day before the party Ken taught Kyle how to use the brew kit we bought him for christmas.

Ken's friends Rob and Graham met up with us in Stowe and lead the blue room in Smuggler's Notch. It was Kyle's first time ice climbing, and he did his first route with only one semi-attached crampon (we discovered snowboard boots don't effectively take crampons). After climbing, Rob and Graham joined us at my mom's christmas party and stayed the night to climb at lake Willoughby the next day.

We drove to Las Cruces, NM for Christmas and then flew out of El Paso to VT for New Year's. On the way to Las Cruces we stopped to climb the standard route (5.5) on Courthouse rock in AZ. We did the first 3 pitches (there were 8 total) and then it was time to continue the drive.

Jtree with Ken, Dave O. and Rachel. It was raining and snowing on the drive there, so we decided to boulder rather than climb routes. The rain stopped and we were able to boulder on the trashcan traverse and the chocolate boulders. I'd never been to the chocolate boulders, and they were pretty cool. The 6 hrs of fighting traffic from LA to SD was definitely worth it to see Erika! She has a super sweet pad within a short walk to the beach. The all-day pool party in her complex (complete with dj and pool volleyball) and biking to the beach and local restaurants made a great vacation!

Ken and I headed up to Bishop Friday night and camped at the buttermilks. On Saturday we hiked about 3.5 miles to Wheeler peak to check out couloir conditions and acclimate to the altitude (in preparation for Sunday's hike/climb up Mt. Abbot). Ken, Keith and I ran 6 canyons in south west Utah. We spent most of the time in the Robber's roost area and enjoyed a great camp site. Ken brought a huge tarp and we strung it between the two cars for shade. Keith brought a cooler that contained several pounds of cheese. I took notes on the canyons and found lots of pretty rocks.
